DESCR.TXT for Frank Stajano, now a DOOM Master
----------------------------------------------
exam completed on 1994 05 13 (Friday)
Controls used
-------------
Keyboard + 2-button mouse, with custom ergonomic setup.
I used to be a keyboard-only player: I thought that the mouse was
useless because it didn't go backwards. But when I started to redefine
the standard setup I discovered how much more accurate the mouse can
be. I would now never go back to keyboard-only play. I have chosen the
following setup after many refinements and I recommend it. Other
people have adopted it and like it.
Mouse (right hand):
left button: forward
right button: strafe
Keyboard (left hand, from thumb to little finger):
space: use
r: fire
e: backwards
w: run
a: strafe
This arrangement leaves the left hand flat and confortable on the
keyboard (unlike the normal id setup) and, most importantly, gives
fast and convenient access to the "change weapon" keys, without having
to look down at them.
System used
-----------
Olivetti Suprema M6 460, 486 DX2 66, 16 MB, Pro Audio Spectrum 16,
Logitech serial mouse, 17" monitor, ATI Mach 32 local bus graphics on
motherboard, Intel EtherExpress 16 (the machine is known as "the DOOM
server" in this office).
What's good in FREE.LMP
-----------------------
I wanted to produce something in the true spirit of DOOM: "If it
moves, vaporize it quickly." My idea was to complete a level on UV
(100% kills, 100% secrets) using *only* the rocket launcher. Infinite
supply of rockets, but no medikits or stimpacks. You have a very
powerful weapon, but you must use it very carefully, especially in
confined areas, or you won't get a second chance.
Info on FREE.WAD
----------------
The level used is simply the familiar E1M4 (Command Control), with the
appropriate modifications to the "things". There is the customary
addition of a useless registered item (can you spot what it is?) to
prevent the level from working with the shareware version.
You may want to play the WAD yourself to see how fun it is! Although
it may initially appear to be trivial, it is instead at least as
difficult as a normal E1 level on UV. Getting rid of enemies is
obviously much easier than usual, but the true danger comes from your
own weapon, especially in the final maze.
Version of DOOM used
--------------------
1.2 (after finally getting a mouse that worked with it).
Comments
--------
The hardest by far has been E2M5, basically because of its size. I
found it very difficult to finish it within the 15 minutes or so
before the LMP recorder times out. E3M9 was hard, but at least time
was not so tight; I could even afford the luxury to go back so as to
finish with 199 health. E1M3 was easy compared to the other two --
after finally completing E2M5 I felt I could re-record E1M3 to end
with maximum health, armour, bullets and shells. The FREE turned out
to be the easiest of the lot, in comparison, but I didn't change it
for something else because I liked the idea anyway.
I believe that the most important tip to achieve DOOM mastership is
this: learn to play with "run" pressed all the time!
